Topamax (Topiramate)

What is Topamax (generic name Topiramate)?

Topamax is a brand name drug classified as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic topiramate and is commonly prescribed as a seizure medication. Besides treating seizures, Topamax has also been used effectively to prevent migraine headaches in adults. While being highly effective at preventing migraines in adults that consume topiramate regularly, it has no effect on a headache or migraine once it has begun. It is always important to discuss any questions or concerns that you have that pertain to any medication with your physician and/or your pharmacist and defer to their professional opinion.

When starting or stopping any medication, it is highly advised to talk to your medical professional, but this is especially true while taking Topamax during pregnancy. Topiramate can cause harm to an unborn baby, and a seizure during a pregnancy could cause complications for both the mother and child. Discussing your options with the doctor will help you to make the decision that yields the most benefits and least risk for both the mother and baby’s health.

What is Topamax used for?

Topamax is commonly used as the primary medication to prevent and treat seizures and prevent migraines. With regular consumption, regulated by a healthcare professional, people can effectively manage their seizures and decrease the frequency of migraine headaches. Read the medication guide and patient information leaflet that is made available by the pharmacist and take the time to ask any questions that you require regarding topiramate during the visits to refill the medication.

Topiramate medication is taken orally and can be consumed with or without food as directed on the label of the bottle; it is usually consumed two to three times a day. While there are limited negative effects to breaking the capsules or tablets, many people find the taste unbearable and it is, therefore, encouraged to consume the Topamax tablets whole. Drinking plenty of fluids, preferably water, will ensure that your body is best able to process the added stress of medications, such as topiramate.

As discussed with your physician, taking Topamax regularly and as prescribed will provide you with the most benefit. Often medications that are preventative, such as topiramate, take time to build sufficient levels in the body and can take a few weeks of regular consumption to reach full effect. Discussing the effects, including Topamax side effects, with your physician regularly will ensure that you are getting a sufficient dose of topiramate. Always consult a physician and/or pharmacist if you have any concerns when taking any medication, including Topamax.
