What is Prilosec (omeprazole)?

Prilosec, generic omeprazole, is part of a class of drugs that is referred to as a proton pump inhibitor. The effect of Prilosec OTC is that it decreases the volume of acid that is produced in the stomach. The ingredients of Prilosec are used to treat the symptoms of excess stomach acid production and disorders, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease. In addition, Prilosec, generic omeprazole, is used to help treat the damage that is done to people’s esophagus when they have a digestive disorder. While Prilosec OTC is not an instant relief medication for heartburn, but it has been shown to help treat gastric ulcers caused by bacterial infections when used in combination with antibiotics.

Taking Prilosec generic is not recommended if you are allergic to omeprazole or any other benzimidazole medications, as they can have a negative drug interaction.
