Celexa (citalopram) Side Effects

Many people are prescribed Celexa (citalopram HBr) for a variety of conditions including anxiety and depression. If you have been prescribed this drug, what do you need to know about it? One particular concern of yours may be the possible side effects of taking this medication. Let's take a minute to discuss the possible side effects associated with Celexa, how often they occur, and how they may affect men and women differently.

Some of the more common, but less severe, Celexa side effects include dry mouth, drowsiness, sleep problems, sweating, and stomach issues like diarrhea and nausea. Not everyone will experience these symptoms, but those who do have to deal with them should not worry too much, since they are fairly minor things.

Celexa Side Effects in Men

Celexa side effects in men may be more serious and can often be sexual in nature. Some men may find it impossible to get sexually aroused while on Celexa. Others may not be able to ejaculate. The sexual side effects may also include a lack of desire. Fortunately, these side effects generally go away once a person is off the medication. In very rare cases, the sexual side effects may become permanent.

Celexa Side Effects in Women

Celexa side effects in women can also include having difficulty reaching sexual climax. Another side effect that specifically occurs with women is that it can throw off the timing of a woman's menstrual cycle. Side effects involving menstrual cycles are rather uncommon.

Some of the more severe side effects include difficulty breathing, restlessness, and loss of memory or confusion. While these side effects are very serious in nature, they are also far less common than other side effects.

There are also some extremely rare Celexa side effects in men and women. One example is that either gender can produce a discharge of milk. Obviously this is particularly odd for a man, but it is also strange for a woman who is not breastfeeding to experience this. Again, this is a rather uncommon side effect, but it is just as likely to affect either gender.

Obviously many of the potential Celexa side effects are not pleasant, however, the conditions it is used to treat can truly damage a person's quality of life. Plus, these side effects are not sure to occur. Thus, many doctors will prescribe this medication because the potential benefits outweigh the likelihood of any serious side effects occurring. If you experience any of these side effects while taking Celexa, you should consult your doctor immediately.
