Prozac Side Effects (Fluoxetine)

Prozac is an antidepressant medication that is prescribed for a variety of treatment programs that range from chronic depression to anxiety attacks and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). As with any type of psychotropic drug, there are a wide range of possible Prozac side effects. The patient should always communicate the onset of any of these potential negative reactions immediately to his or her prescribing physician in order to perhaps regulate or change the dosage requirements.

Emergent Prozac Side Effects in Men and Woman

For the most part, the medication does not discriminate when it comes to the possible side effects that result from a Prozac treatment program. The more common but highly critical symptoms that may occur include difficulty in breathing, swelling of the lips, face, throat or tongue and perhaps development of hives or rash. If the patients notices any of these side effects, they should seek emergency medical treatment immediately.

Other Possible Side Effects

Less critical, but also important to note, are Prozac side effects that include increased heart beats, confusion, excessive sweating, sore muscles, fatigue and headache. These symptoms may appear more severe in the initial first weeks of the treatment program, and then decrease as your body becomes used to the medication.

Other potential side effects commonly include fluctuations in weight, changes in appetite, sleeping disorders or nervousness. Common Prozac side effects in women might include changes in the menstruation cycle. For women who are pregnant, Prozac can lead to complications of lung development in the unborn baby. Possible Prozac side effects in men include impotency and sexual dysfunction.
