Prozac (Fluoxetine Hcl)

What is Prozac (fluoxetine hydrochloride)?

Prozac (generic name fluoxetine) is an antidepressant medication that is prescribed for medical treatment programs in patients suffering from a variety of emotional disorders that include chronic depression, bipolar disorder, bulimia, panic attacks and other anxiety disorders. The active ingredient is fluoxetine hydrochloride which acts to regulate the serotonin levels in the brain. For these types of medical conditions, these fluctuations in brain chemical production are thought to be a contributing factor.

Bipolar Disorders

The root cause of this emotional ailment is still unclear, but Prozac has proven to provide significant value in the management of the ensuing symptoms. Patients who suffer from manic depression or bipolar disorders often live in a state of extremely severe mood swings which can prove to be harmful to themselves or to others. Fluoxetine hcl helps by stabilizing the serotonin levels which decreases, but does not cure, these medical symptoms.

Bulimia

Bulimia is an eating disorder where the patient has an obsessive-compulsive need to maintain their body weight. Sufferers will binge eat large amounts of food, only to purge or vomit immediately thereafter. This ailment is caused by a combination of psychological, emotional and environmental factors, but Prozac treatment programs help to calm the inner thoughts and compulsions to a manageable level in many cases.

Anxiety Disorders

We all feel anxious from time to time, but those suffering from severe anxiety disorders live in a constant state of fear that something horrible is about to happen. These fears and phobias can often seem illogical to their friends and family. By regulating the serotonin production of the brain, Prozac has been a common treatment program for all forms of anxiety disorders and even panic attacks.
