Common side effects of Norvasc (amlodipine)

Let's begin with the more common side effects. Once a patient is started on Norvasc, it can take the body a while to get used to the drug. For others, there may be some effects felt that can cause discomfort. Water retention, especially in the hands and feet, is the one side effect nearly all patients experience. Other common side effects of Norvasc can include headache, dizziness, and drowsiness. Vertigo and tiredness are more intense variations. Less common (but still relatively mild), effects from this drug can include things like pounding heartbeats, syncopal events (fainting), and depression. If you experience these symptoms, call your doctor.

Rare side effects of Norvasc (amlodipine)

Rare symptoms occur in less than 1% of those taking Norvasc when tested. These symptoms can be serious, so if at anytime while taking amlodipine or Norvasc you experience one or more of these, seek medical attention. Among the more serious effects are angina and heart attack. This requires immediate attention. Abnormal liver function, increase in heartbeats, and pain or heaviness in arms or shoulders are other signs that you need medical attention.

Rare side effects of amlodipine that are a bit less serious can include restlessness, numbness, weight fluctuations, anxiety, and blotchy skin. Some people may experience stomach pain or nausea. Others may find they have heart flutters. Sweating or general ill feelings can make the experience even more unpleasant. These too should be mentioned to your healthcare provider.

If while taking Norvasc you experience one or more of these side effects, it is recommended that you talk to your doctor. Even before taking a new medication, reviewing what to expect with your doctor can help. Improving health and decreasing blood pressure and the effects of heart disease is the objective.
