Synthroid (Levothyroxine) Side Effects

Synthroid is a medication used for the treatment of hypothyroidism. It is also known by its common name as levothyroxine. Synthroid is a synthetic version of the naturally occurring hormone thyroxine. Thyroxine is typically produced by the thyroid in healthy individuals. When hypothyroidism occurs the levels of thyroxine produced are drastically reduced. This can lead to weight gain and feelings of lethargy. The biggest cause of side effects developing is due to using too great of a dosage of Synthroid. This can result in an overcorrection of the problem which can lead to undesirable side effects. Patients whose prescribed dosage of Synthroid is too high can actually develop hyperthyroidism as a result of having too much Synthroid in their system. One of the key signs of having too much levothyroxine in your system is the development of heart palpitations. Not treating this can lead to excessive strain being put upon the heart which can ultimately be dangerous and detrimental to ones health. It can also cause mental effects such as anxiety and confusion. Insomnia is also a result of having too high of a dosage of Synthroid. Some may also experience rapid weight loss which can be accompanied by an increased appetite. If any of these symptoms are experienced a medical professional should be consulted immediately as these can be potentially dangerous side effects. In rare cases one may actually be allergic to Synthroid. Allergic reactions to Synthroid are characterized by shortness of breath and swelling of the face.

In cases where the side effects are not overly severe treatment will consist of lowering the dosage of Synthroid received by the patient. It is important to find the proper dosage and it may take a few times of adjustment by a medical professional before the dosage is correct. In some cases the side effects may be more severe and require immediate treatment. Treatment is recommended to be symptomatic and supportive. This means that the side effects will be treated specifically to make the patient more comfortable. Often beta-blockers are given to the patient to decrease sympathetic activity. Generally the side effects are not life threatening and should subside with proper medical care and time.

Synthroid and alcohol

Combining alcohol with Synthroid can also result in side effects. Your thyroid effects your whole metabolism so it effects how you metabolism alcohol as well. Because of this having alcohol while taking Synthroid can increase the effects felt from alcohol. This can be dangerous and lead to a loss of coordination and loss of consciousness. It also can be harder on the liver as the alcohol is not processed as quickly which puts more strain upon the liver. Generally, having one or two drinks while on Synthroid should not be a major medical problem.
