Baclofen Dosage (10 mg, 20 mg)

Baclofen is a drug that is used to treat a number of diverse conditions. Thus, the proper baclofen dosage has much to do with the condition that it is being used to treat. Baclofen and muscle spasms

For muscle spasms, a patient will be prescribed baclofen 5 mg pills to be taken three times per day. This is a three day long dose. For the next three days, the patient will take a baclofen 10 mg pill three times per day. The increase will continue with 15 mg three times per day for the next three days, and finally baclofen 20 mg pills three times per day from then forward. The maximum daily dosage for management of muscle spasms is 80 mg per day. If this dosage is used, 4 doses will be taken per day.

Trigeminal neuralgia

Baclofen can also be used to treat Trigeminal Neuralgia which is a condition which causes sharp pain. It is a nerve disorder. When treating this condition, doctors will use the same process to gradually increase dosage until a regular dose for maintenance of the condition is reached. The maximum baclofen dosage for Trigeminal Neuralgia is also 80 mg in 4 daily doses.

Hiccups

Baclofen can also be used to treat chronic hiccuping. Doctors will again use the same procedure for increasing the dosage until the patient has reached the proper dose to keep the condition at bay. For hiccups, the standard dose will be between 40 and 80 milligrams per day.

Cerebral spasticity

Cebebral spacticity is a form of Cerebral Palsy in which the muscles tighten. This is the most common form of the disease of comprising over 9 out of 10 cases. To treat this condition baclofen is directly injected into the body. Test doses are done first to see how the patient will react. 300-800 mcg per day is the usual range for this condition, although doses can be as low as 12 mcg per day and as high as 1500.

Baclofen overdose

To avoid the risk of baclofen overdose, always take the medication as directed. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you are close to your next dose, skip it. Never double up on a dose to try and catch up from a missed dose. A dangerous overdose could result.
